June 2006 - Mountain Biking Campout
Kettle Moraine State Forest - Warrenville, WI
The scouts enjoyed a weekend stay at the Kettle Moraine State Park in Wisconsin. When we arrived on Friday Night, we had the typical challenges of setting up our tents while it was getting dark and starting to rain. We quickly ate our cracker barrel and went to bed. On Saturday, we went mountain biking on nearby biking trails. Everyone had a lot of fun flying through the forest and trying different trails. We all started on the red trail and the some of the more adventurous scouts ventured out on the white, green, and orange trails. After dinner we had a hike down to a lake near our campsite and had fun lying around the lake and looking for frogs. The mountain biking took place on the John Muir trails during the day Saturday in the Kettle Moraine State Forest in Wisconsin.

KETTLE; ket-'l, kettle-shaped depressions in the landscape formed by the melting of large blocks of ice that were buried in glacial drift.

MORAINE; mo-ran', hilly belts of connected ridges and mounds that are usually formed along the glacier's edge.

Kettle Moraine is a 100 mile band of hills, ridges, and depressions in eastern Wisconsin formed along the intersection of two gigantic lobes of ice during the last Ice Age, 10,000 to 25,000 years ago. The kettles are places where blocks of ice were burried under sand and gravel. When the ice melted, the soil on top caved in creating depressions. Some filled with water up to 100 feet deep. A forest of hardwoods mixed with pine plantations cover the landscape.

There are 5 different trail loops of differing difficulty and duration to choose from....

Red Loop (1.5 miles)
The Red loop is a good, short (beginner level) loop through open fields, scattered pines and hardwoods. This loop has only one small downhill section. Some bikers use this loop to warm-up before taking the other loops.

White Loop (4.0 miles)
The White loop, an intermediate level trail, adds roughly 2 miles to the Red loop. You will encounter a narrow section of the trail that overlooks the largest of three leatherleaf bogs.

Orange Loop (5.3 miles)
The Orange loop offers steep uphills and downhills, but avoids the more technical sections that are encountered on the Green and Blue loops.

Green Loop (6.8 miles)
Some of the roughest most diverse sections of the Kettle Moraine Forest will be encountered as you travel along the Green and Blue loops. Because of the steep hills, rocky terrain and sharp turns, the green and blue loops are popular with serious mountain bikers.

Blue Loop (10.0 miles)
Some of the best single track in the area, this loop was designed just for mountain biking. The blue loop takes you 3.2 miles deep into an old growth forest. If you are ready to test your physical strength and ability, take the blue loop!.

Illinois Caverns - Burkesville, IL (March 10-12) | Show Cave | Show Camp
This weekend we went to the Illinois Caverns. The scouts had fun crawling through muddy passages and exploring strange stalactites and stalagmites. The weather was pretty shaky but, luckily we got back home before any storms threatened to spoil the camp-out.

February 2006 - Merit Badge Clinic
ASM L. Christian's House - Naperville, IL (January 28 & February 11)
Over two Saturdays in January and February Troop 510 held our annual Merit Badge Clinic. This year we had ten different merit badge choices with topics for both new and older scouts. The merit badges included: American Heritage, Personal Management, Photography, Citizenship in the Community, Family Life, Oceanography, Personal Fitness, Citizenship in the World, Fire Safety, and Fingerprinting (which was really popular with the new scouts)! Nearly everyone signed up for two merit badges and some of the new scouts were able to complete three. Everyone had a good time and enjoyed taking the merit badges because the Christian house has lots of small rooms and gives for peace and quiet.
